Heute Morgen genoss ich nochmals das fantastische Frühstückbuffet im Hotel Rydges... Obschon es bedeckt war, war die Aussicht trotzdem toll! Danach stellte ich meinen Post von gestern ins Netz – was im Nu getan war bei dem superschnellen Internet – und machte mich bereit für die Weiterreise, die ich kurz vor Mittag antrat.

Once again I enjoyed the fantastic breakfast buffet at the Hotel Rydges... although it was overcast this morning, the view was still great! Thereafter, I put my post from yesterday online - which was done in no time with the fast Internet here at the hotel - and made myself ready for my ongoing journey, which I started just before noon.

Es war kühl, nur gerade 15 Grad, und ich fuhr zum Flughafen um eventuell einen Platz im Flugzeug oder Helikopter zu den Milford Sounds zu erhaschen, aber die Flüge waren wegen schlechtem Wetter allesamt abgesagt. So fuhr ich weiter Richtung Südwesten… je mehr ich gegen Westen fuhr, desto sonniger wurde es! Als ich 2 Stunden und 170 km später in Te Anau eintraf war es bereits wieder 20 Grad!

It was cool, only 15 centigrade, and I drove to the airport to try and get a seat on a plane or a helicopter to the Milford Sounds, but all the flights were cancelled because of bad weather. So I continued on towards the southwest... the more I drove to the west, the sunnier it got! When I arrived at Te Anau 2 hours and 170 km later it was already 20 centigrade!

In Te Anau am gleichnamigen See zog mich ein angelegtes Wasserflugzeug magisch an… dort warteten Ivan, der Pilot, und Edith aus Deutschland und eine Möchtegern-Passagierin, auf einen weiteren Fluggast, damit es vom Wasser ab in die Lüfte gehen konnte – ich war zur Stelle! : ) 10 Minuten später hoben wir mit der Wings & Water-Maschine ab… Ivan der Schreckliche ; ), u.a. Musiker und zweifacher nationaler Kunstflugmeister, sagte, dass heute der schönster Tag sei langem ist, und dass hier folgende Weisheit gilt: Wenn dir das Wetter nicht gefällt, dann warte eine halbe Stunde! : ) Ivan erzählte uns auch, dass mit Wasserflugzeugen dieser Firma als erste vor 45 Jahren die Versorgung von Lebensmitteln und allem, was nötig war, gewährleistet wurde…

In Te Anau on the lake of the same name, a landed seaplane attracted me magically... there, Ivan, the pilot, and Edith from Germany and a wannabe passenger, were waiting for another passenger to get off from the water into the air – and it was me they were waiting for! : ) 10 minutes later we took off with the Wings & Water watercraft... Ivan the terrible ; ), i.a. musician and two-time national aerobatic champion, said that today was the most beautiful day since a long time and that the following wisdom applies: If you do not like the weather, wait for half an hour! : ) It was with seaplanes of this company as the first one that the supply of food and everything else that was necessary was ensured 45 years ago...

Als wir 15 Minuten später wieder auf dem Lake Te Anau gelandet waren, änderte sich das Wetter schlagartig. Nach einem solchen Flug konnten mir die Milford und all die andern Sounds eh gestohlen bleiben und so fuhr ich weiter Richtung Süden… Es begann schon bald zu regnen und das Thermometer sank auf kalte 10 Grad! Alleine auf weiter Flur fuhr ich tapfer weiter bis ich eine Stunde später das Meer ganz im Süden der Südinsel erreichte.

When we landed 15 minutes later back on Lake Te Anau, the weather changed rapidly. After such a flight Milford and all the other Sounds can go and jump into the lake anyways, that’s why I drove on direction south... It soon started to rain and the thermometer sank to cold 10 centigrade! Out on a limb I bravely continued until I reached the ocean in the south of the South Island one hour later.

Um 18 Uhr traf ich im wild-romantischen Riverton ein und beschloss mir hier eine Bleibe zu suchen. Ich fuhr die ganze wunderschöne Küste bis nach The Rock ab und stellte mir geistig schon meinen Joggingweg für morgen vor…

At 6 pm I reached wild-romantic Riverton and decided to look for a place to stay. I checked the whole beautiful coast up to The Rock and already imagined me jogging here tomorrow morning...

Eine halbe Stunde später hatte ich nach total 330 km heute ein schönes Studio bei Robbie's Beach Side Accommodation mit Sicht aufs Meer gefunden. Und nur 500 m weiter befand sich das Beach House, das ideale Restaurant, wo mir Carla einen neuen Fisch servierte: Einen Kaiser- oder auch Granatbarsch genannt auf Gemüse und Kartoffeln – natürlich mit einem Glas Pinot Gris aus dem Norden der Südinsel! Was für ein weiterer herrlicher Tag! : ))

Half an hour later after a total of 330 km today, I found a beautiful studio at Robbie’s Beach Side Accommodation with ocean view. And just 500 meters away was the Beach House, the pretty restaurant, where Carla served me a new fish: An orange roughy on vegetables and potatoes - of course with a glass of pinot gris from the north of the South Island! – What another glorious day! : ))

01.02.2017 Queenstown, New Zealand

 

Um 8 Uhr war ich schon wieder wach, obschon ich meinen Wecker auf 9:30 Uhr gestellt hatte… Ich schlafe hier weniger als zu Hause (eigentlich sind 9 Stunden für mich ideal, denn Schlaf betrachte ich als die wichtigste Medizin!) – hier will ich einfach sooo viel unternehmen und sehen! Das Wetter war bedeutend freundlicher als gestern und so ich begann meinen Tag heute und hier zu planen…

 

I was awake again at 8 am although I had set my alarm clock at 9:30 am... I sleep less here than at home (9 hours are ideal for me, I consider sleep as the most important medicine!) - here I am keen on doing and seeing everything possible! The weather was much friendlier than yesterday and so I started to plan my day here and now...

Als ich um 9:30 Uhr in den 6. Stock des Hotel Rydges zum Frühstück kam, verschlug es mir die Sprache: Nicht nur der überwältigende Ausblick auf den Lake Wakatipu sondern ein Frühstücksbüffet vom Feinsten erwartete mich: Das Restaurant ist absolut geschmackvoll gestaltet und das Essen angerichtet wie ein Bild – zudem alles qualitativ hochstehend (zum Beispiel frische Säfte und Gourmet-Brote!) mit super nettem und aufmerksamem Personal, da bleiben wirklich keine Wünsche übrig! Wie mir Jaco, der Konferenz- und Verkaufsleiter berichtete, ist das neu renovierte Restaurant erst seit 2 Wochen wiedereröffnet… Die Zimmer sind okay und in Arbeit, aber was es dazu gibt ist unschlagbar! : ))

When I arrived for breakfast on the 6th floor of the Hotel Rydges, I was dumbfounded: Not only the overwhelming view of Lake Wakatipu, but a breakfast buffet of the finest was expecting me: The restaurant is absolutely tastefully decorated and designed and the food displayed like a picture - in addition, everything of high quality (for example fresh squeezed juices and gourmet breads!)  and all assisted by super nice and attentive staff, to leave nothing to be desired! As Jaco, the conference and sales manager reported, the newly renovated restaurant has only been reopened for a couple weeks... The rooms are okay and in the works, but what you get with it is unbeatable! : ))

Nachdem ich das Frühstück einigermassen verdaut hatte, ging ich dem Sunshine Bay Track bei Sonnenschein entlang dem 300 km² grossen Lake Wakatipu joggen… herrlich, so eine Strecke von der Haustür zu haben! Als ich am Kieselstrand einige Yogaübungen machte, musste ich den Platz plötzlich fluchtartig verlassen, denn springflutartig stieg der Wasserspiegel heftig an (wie ich nachforschte: Alle paar Minuten um 12 cm!). Die Maori sagen es sei der Herzschlage des schlafenden Riesen auf dem Seegrund… oder ist es doch eher ein Phänomen, verursacht durch den Wechsel des Atmosphärendrucks durch kalte und heisse Luftbewegungen über dem See?

After having digested breakfast somewhat, I went for a run on the Sunshine Bay Track with sunshine along the 300 km² Lake Wakatipu... just splendid to have such a track  in front of the house! When I made my yoga exercises on a pebble beach, I suddenly had to leave the place hurriedly, as the water level rose like in tide spring (as I researched: Every few minutes around 12 cm!).  The Maori say it is the heartbeat of the sleeping giant on the lake bottom... or is it rather a phenomenon caused by the change of the atmospheric pressure by cold and hot air movements over the lake?

Am späten Nachmittag war ich dann in der Stimmung die Stadt zu erobern… Nach einem nur 5 Minuten Spaziergang dem See entlang befand ich mich im Zentrum. Es hatte immer noch extrem viele Leute, vor allem Chinesen. Was mir hier weiter auffiel ist, dass die Geschäfte bis 20 Uhr geöffnet sind, bisher in Neuseeland waren alle Geschäfte um 17 Uhr geschlossen…

In the late afternoon I was in the mood to conquer town... It only took me a 5 minutes walk along the lake and I was in the centre. There were still extremely many people around, especially Chinese. What I further noticed is that the shops are open until 8 pm, so far in New Zealand all shops were closed at 5 pm...

Um eine fantastische Aussicht über die Stadt und vor allem dem Lake Wakatipu und die Berge zu erhaschen, bestieg ich die Gondel zum Bob's Peak auf dem Ben Lomond (815 m). Um hinunter zu gelangen hat man die Qual der Wahl: Per Asphalt Bob, Mountainbike, Gleitschirm oder Bungee Jumping? - Ich nahm die gemütliche Gondel zurück! ; )

To get a fantastic view over the city and especially Lake Wakatipu and the mountains, I took a gondola up to Bob's Peak on Ben Lomond (815 m). To get back down you are spoilt for choices: By luge, mountain bike, paragliding or bungee jumping? - I took the comfy gondola! ; )

Zurück im Hotel Rydges hatte ich eigentlich vor im Restaurant im 6. Stock mein Abendessen einzunehmen, aber leider war es kein à la carte Restaurant, sondern ein Buffet, das für meinen zu kleinen Hunger viel zu gross war… : ( So zog ich mich in mein Zimmer zurück und genoss einen ruhigen Abend mit Arbeit und früher Bettruhe…

Back at Hotel Rydges, I actually intended to have dinner at the restaurant on the 6th floor, but unfortunately it was not an à la carte restaurant but a buffet, which was much too big for my too little hunger... : ( That's why I retreated to my room and enjoyed a quiet evening working and having an early night...
