13.07.2017 Rarotonga, Cook Islands – Puna’auia, Tahiti

Heute Morgen war ich schon relativ früh wach und machte mich bereit den langen Strand vor der Türe abzujoggen... Meine Joggingschuhe waren jedoch dermassen dreckig, feucht und die halbe Sohle fehlte seit gestern, dass ich zuerst in die Stadt joggte um mir neue zu kaufen!

This morning, I was awake already quite early and I made myself ready to run the long beach in front of the door... My jogging shoes were very dirty, damp and half the sole was missing since yesterday so that I first jogged to town to buy me new ones!

Mit neuen Joggingschuhen machte ich mich auf allem am Strand entlang bis zum Raro Club, wo ich bei Louisa einen starken doppelten Espresso genoss. Auf dem Rückweg fand ich trotz Ebbe ein Becken in der Lagune um schwimmen zu gehen - einfach immer ein super Tagesstart! : )

With new jogging shoes I made my way all along the beach to the Raro Club, where I enjoyed a strong double espresso with Louisa. On the way back I found a swimming pool in the lagoon to go for a swim despite a low tide – it is simply always a great start of the day! : )

Zurück im Paradise Inn machte ich mich und mein Gepäck abreisebereit und spazierte dann zum Frisörsalon Topshape, wo ich einen Termin ausgemacht hatte um meine strapazierten Haare wieder in Form zu bringen...

Back at the Paradise Inn, I made myself as well as my bags ready for departure and went to the hairdressing salon Topshape, where I had arranged an appointment to get my strained hair back in top shape...

Nun hiess es Abschiednehmen von der liebenswerten Chantelle, ursprünglich aus Südafrika - sie half mir viel mit meinen Plänen hier auf den Cook Islands und ich konnte mein Zimmer bis zu meiner Abreise um 14 Uhr behalten! : )

Now it was time to say goodbye to lovely Chantelle, originally from South Africa - she assisted me a lot with my plans here on the Cook Islands and I could keep my room until my departure at 2 pm! : )

Um 14 Uhr fuhr ich mit einem Taxi zum Flughafen… ich schien die Einzige am Flughafen zu sein, so war das Check-in im Nu getan. Als alle Passagiere eingecheckt hatten und an Bord waren machte sich die ATR42 der Air Tahiti fast eine halbe Stunde früher auf den Weg nach Tahiti... Im Flugzeug sassen Marina und Martin aus Thun eine Reihe hinter mir und wir hatten solch anregende Gespräche, dass wir fast schon wieder landetet! Aber die Landung in Faaa erfolgte ebenfalls halbe Stunde früher, so dass wir sogar auf die Zöllner warten mussten, die noch nicht mit uns gerechnet hatten! ; )

At 2 pm I took a taxi to the airport... I seemed to be the only one at the airport so check-in was done in no time. When all the passengers had checked in and were on board, the ATR42 of Air Tahiti set out for Tahiti almost half an hour earlier as scheduled... On the plane I got into stimulating conversations with Marina and Martin from Thun, who were sitting a row behind me so time went quickly until we landed! Landing in Faaa took place also half an hour earlier, so we even had to wait for the custom officers, who had not yet reckoned with us! ; )

Am Flughafen wurde ich von Vaimano erwartet, er spielte mir seine neuste Komposition bei meiner Ankunft! : ) Ich holte meinen Mietwagen bei Eco Car ab, wir suchten mit Martin und Marina noch vergeblich eine Bank, die mit ihren Karten doch nicht funktionierten, und fuhren dann nach Puna’auia mit kurzem Halt unterwegs im Roulotte Hi'ilei um ein Maki Steak (Fisch) mit vielen Beilagen zu verspeisen…

At the airport I was expected by Vaimano, he played me his latest composition on my arrival! : ) I walked up to Eco Car to get my rental car, we searched for a bank with Martin and Marina, but could not find one which worked with their cards, and then we drove to Puna'auia with a short stop at the roulotte Hi'ilei for a maki steak (fish) with many side dishes...

Heute Morgen habe ich wieder mal ausgeschlafen - bis 9 Uhr! : ) Eine Stunde später weckten mich dann 2 doppelte Espressi im The Café gänzlich und ich genoss dort auch gleich ein leckeres Frühstück: Bagel mit Hummus, Käse, Tomaten und Pesto - mmmhhhhh!

This morning I slept in - until 9 am! : ) An hour later 2 double espressi woke me completely up at The Café and I enjoyed a delicious breakfast once being there: Bagel with hummus, cheese, tomatoes and pesto - mmmhhhhh!

Am frühen Nachmittag machte ich mich dann auf für den Cross-Island Walk... vom Paradise Inn spazierte ich zuerst in die Stadt Avarua und vom Avatiu Harbour ging es dann landeinwärts zuerst ein Stück auf asphaltierter Strasse zum Parkplatz, wo ich eine Stunde später ankam. Dann folgte ich ¾ Stunden zuerst einer Naturstrasse, dann einem steilen Weg durch den Busch - Baumwurzeln waren die Treppentritte! Zuoberst angelangt hat man ein fantastisches Panorama und Ausblick auf Rarotongas Wahrzeichen, dem Te Rua Manga, auch The Needle (413 m) genannt. Darauf ging es ebenso steil hinunter und es war extrem rutschig wegen all des vielen Regens in den letzten Tagen... ich rutschte einige Male aus und ein Teil der Sohle meines linken Joggingschuhs löste sich! : ( Etwas handicapiert war es um so schwerer hinunter zu gelangen - dann war es auch schwierig den Weiterverlauf des Wanderweges zu finden, da er einige Male durch den Fluss führte... glücklicherweise begegnete ich den sportlichen Jungs JJ und Brad, denen ich folgen konnte. Total 3 1/2 Stunden später erreichten wir den ausgetrockneten Wigmore's Wasserfall, wo JJ und Brad ihren Scooter auf dem Parkplatz gestellt hatten - ich marschierte die paar hundert Meter zur Hauptstrasse. Bis der Bus kam entschied ich Autostopp zu machen und hatte Glück: Das dritte Auto hielt an und eine nette Lady führt mich zurück in die Stadt Avarua.

In the early afternoon I headed for the cross-island walk... from the Paradise Inn I first walked to town of Avarua and from Avatiu Harbour I marched inland first a bit on a paved road to the car park where I arrived an hour later. Then I first followed a natural road, then a steep path through the bush for about 3/4 hours - roots were the steps! At the top I had a fantastic panorama and view of Rarotongas landmark, the Te Rua Manga, also called The Needle (413 m). Then it went down just as steep and it was extremely slippery because of the many rainfalls during the last days... I slipped out a few times and a part of the sole of my left jogging shoe broke! : ( A bit handicapped it was even more difficult to climb down, in addition it was difficult to find the trail when crossing the river several times... fortunately I met the athletic guys JJ and Brad, whom I could follow. After totally 3 ½ hours walk we arrived at the dried out Wigmore's waterfall, where JJ and Brad had parked their scooter - I marched the few hundred meters to the main road. I decided to hitchhike until the bus would come and was lucky: The third car stopped and a nice lady took me back to town of Avarua.

Nach einer herrlichen Dusche und Glas Wein beim Sonnenuntergang marschierte ich zum Restaurant Tamarind House um nochmals ein Thunsteak zu geniessen mit Wasabi-Mayonnaise, Papaya-Chutney, Broccoli und Brotfrucht-Chips - ein perfekter letzter Abend auf Rarotonga! : ))

After a wonderful shower and glass of wine at sunset, I walked to the restaurant Tamarind House to enjoy another tuna steak with wasabi mayonnaise, papaya chutney, broccoli and bread fruit chips - a perfect last evening in Rarotonga! : ))
