Was für ein Tag war das heute - ich rannte nur umher! Am Morgen musste ich in der Apotheke meine Medikamente abholen aber es war niemand da mit einem Auto... Um 10 Uhr kam Victoria mit den chinesischen Gästen zurück und wir machten uns auf den Weg. Es ist wirklich beeindruckend: Auch für Touristen sind Medikamente auf Wallis und Futuna kostenlos, so wie auch schon gestern Nacht die Untersuchung im Spital! 

 

What a day it was today – all I did was running around! In the morning I had to pick up my medication at the pharmacy but there was nobody around with a car... At 10 am Victoria came back with the Chinese guests and we set off. It is really impressive: Even for tourists medicines on Wallis and Futuna are free, as well as the examination in the hospital last night!

Zurück im Hotel Moana Hou verstaute ich alles, was ich für die 3-4 Tage auf Futuna nicht benötigte, in meinen kleinen Koffer und einen grossen Sack. Die Chinesen reisten um dieselbe Zeit ab, jedoch nach Fidschi, so dass wir alle zusammen an den Flughafen fahren konnten. Nur die Chinesen waren entweder nicht aufzufinden oder noch nicht bereit - haben die Nerven, oder ich keine!? Kurz vor 13 Uhr ging es dann los zum kleinen Flughafen und alle checkten zurzeit ein! Übrigens war es überhaupt nicht sicher ob der Flug nach Futuna gehen würde, denn es regnete extrem heftig den ganzen Morgen... aber wie immer braucht man einfach nur etwas Geduld und alles kommt wie es muss! : )

 

Back at the Hotel Moana Hou, I stowed everything I did not need for the 3-4 days on Futuna in my little suitcase and a big bag. The Chinese had a flight to Fiji around the same time, so we went to the airport together. Only they either were not to be found or not ready – they really have nerves, or do I have none!? Shortly before 1 pm we finally drove to the small airport and everybody checked in on time! By the way, it was not sure at all if the flight would be going to Futuna, because it had been raining extremely heavily the whole morning... but as always all we need is some patience and everything comes as it must anyway! : )

Kurz nach 14 Uhr bestiegen wir (9 Passagiere, 17 haben Platz) den Twin Otter und wenige Minuten später starteten wir Richtung Westen nach Futuna... Unterwegs war es bewölkt und eine Stunde später landeten wir auf der noch kleineren Insel Futuna.

 

Shortly after 2 pm we boarded (9 passengers, there are totally 17 seats) the Twin Otter and a few minutes later we started westwards to Futuna... On the way it was mostly overcast and an hour later we landed on the island of Futuna, which is even smaller than Wallis.

Der Flughafen Pointe Vele liegt im Norden der Insel, wo mich Charles des Hotel Somalama erwartete, das sich in Toloke ganz im Süden befindet. Die Strassen sind aus sehr durchlöcherten Betonplatten, so benötigten wir für die ca. 10 km fast eine halbe Stunde…

 

The airport of Pointe Vele Airport is located in the north of the island. There Charles of the Hotel Somalama was awaiting me, which is situated in Toloke all in the south. The roads here are made of concrete slabs full of potholes, that’s why it took about half an hour to drive the approximately 10 km getting there...

Kurz vor 16 Uhr erreichten wir das Hotel Somalama (eines der 2 Hotels auf der Insel) und ich richtete mich in meinem gemütlichen Zimmer ein. Danach setzte ich mich ins Restaurant, machte mit Charles Pläne für meine Tage hier auf Futuna, genoss den Sonnenuntergang und dann ein herrliches Abendessen: Ein riesiges Rumpsteak mit Pommes und Salat. : ))

Shortly before 4 pm we reached the Hotel Somalama (one of the 2 hotels on the island) and I installed myself in my comfortable room. Thereafter I went down to the restaurant, made plans for my days here on Futuna with Charles, enjoyed the sunset and then a wonderful dinner: A huge rump steak with fries and salad. : ))

Mann, hat das geregnet hier dieses Wochenende! Viel unternehmen konnte ich echt nicht, zum Glück ist die Insel Uvea, wie Wallis von den Einheimischen genannt wird, sehr klein (ca. 12 x 5 km) und ist somit schnell umrundet. Zudem gibt es hier laut den Einheimischen eh nicht viel zu sehen… besonders ist aber, dass es 2 Könige gibt und die Verwaltung wie Polizei etc. französisch ist…

 

Man, it was nothing but raining the whole weekend! I could not really do a lot, fortunately the island of Uvea, as Wallis is called by the locals, is very small (about 12 x 5 km) and thus quickly surrounded. In addition there is not much to see here anyway according to the locals... what is quite special here is that there are 2 kings and the administration like police etc. is French...

Als es mal aufhörte niederzuprasseln, machte ich mich auf die Umgebung joggend zu erkunden. Es gibt keine Strände auf der vulkanischen Insel Wallis, so rannte ich den Strassen entlang, die mit seinen 8‘000 Einwohnern nicht sehr befahren sind – einmal Richtung Süden und einmal Richtung Norden. Ich verzichtete aufs Schwimmen weil ich irgendwie das Gefühl hatte, dass die Entzündungen meiner Wunden vom nicht so sauberen Meer in Amerikanisch Samoa stammen?

 

When it stopped pouring down, I went for a run to explore the area. There are no beaches on the volcanic island of Wallis, so I ran along the roads, which are not very busy with its 8'000 inhabitants - once direction south and once to the north. I didn’t go for a swim because I had the feeling that the infections of my wounds come from the not very clean ocean in American Samoa?

Am Samstag Abend fuhr mich Victoria zum vor 2 Wochen eröffneten hübschen Maloccino Café, wo ich nicht nur von Fano bestens bedient wurde, ein hervorragendes Rindsfilet mit Kartoffelgratin mit einer Flasche St. Emilion genoss, sondern auch meinen Tischnachbarn Eric kennen lernte… Bald waren wir in interessante Gespräche vertieft und der Abend verging im Nu.

 

On Saturday evening Victoria drove me to the pretty Maloccino Café, which had opened only 2 week ago and where I was not only served perfectly by Fano, had excellent beef tenderloin with potato gratin and a bottle of St. Emilion, but also met my table neighbour Eric... Soon we were involved into interesting conversations and the evening passed in no time.

Am Sonntag Nachmittag holte mich Eric für eine Inselrundfahrt ab, nur: Es regnete in Strömen! Die heftigen Regenschauer hatten den Vorteil, dass es wenigstens etwas frischer und somit nicht so heiss war! : ) Aber die Sicht war echt miserabel!! : ( Tapfer fuhren wir im Uhrzeigersinn zuerst Richtung Süden und machten im Norden in Vailala einen Halt für ein spätes Mittagessen im gemütlichen Restaurant Bord de la Mer.

On Sunday afternoon Eric picked me up for an island tour, only: It was raining cats and dogs! The heavy showers had the advantage that it was at least somewhat fresher and thus not so hot! : ) But the view was really miserable!! : ( Bravely we drove clockwise first direction south and made a stop in the north in Vailala for a late lunch at the cozy restaurant Bord de la Mer.

Um 21 Uhr hatte ich ein extremes Ziehen in meinem ganz rechten Bein, die Drüsen waren geschwollen und ich hatte solch Entzündungen auch an meinen Füssen, dass wir beschlossen zur Notaufnahme ins Spital SIA zu fahren. Dort wurde ich freundlich untersucht und es wurde mir eine ganze Liste von Antibiotika und Wundmitteln verschrieben – übrigens ist hier auf Wallis & Futuna die Krankenversorgung wie auch die Medikamente gratis!

At 9 pm I had extreme pains all along of my right leg, the glands were swollen and my inflammations were so bad also at my feet that we decided to go to the emergency room in the hospital SIA. There I was kindly examined and I prescribed a whole list of antibiotics and medicines for my wounds - by the way, here on Wallis & Futuna health care as well as the medication is free!

Auch heute nahm ich es ruhig - das ist was ich in den letzten 2 Wochen gelernt hatte hier, es blieb mir ja nichts anderes übrig! : ) Nachdem ich mich und mein Gepäck reisebereit gemacht hatte, unternahm ich meinen letzten Gang zum Corner Café und durch die Stadt um mich von allen, die ich kannte, zu verabschieden.

 

Also today I took it easy - this is what I had learned in the last 2 weeks here because there was nothing else left to do! : ) After I had prepared my luggage, I took my last walk to the Corner Café and through town to say good-bye to all I knew.

 

 

Bal, Airport Nadi

 

 

Victoria kam zum Mittagessen nach Hause um meine letzte Stunde vor meiner Abreise mit mir zu verbringen und sich zu verabschieden... : ( Kurz vor 15 Uhr erschien Bal mit seinem Taxi, wir luden mein Gepäck ein und los ging es zum Flughafen... Der Flughafen befindet sich nur ca. 10 km von der Stadt Nadi entfernt und kurz nach 15 Uhr kamen wir dort an. Am Check-in erhielt ich extra Service von Tahimeen und Tyrone, Aircalin, und ich konnte meinen 2. Koffer gratis aufgeben! : )) Im Büro von Aircalin bezahlte und holte ich mein Ticket von Wallis nach Futuna ab - so habe ich ein Programm für die kommende Woche! ; ) 

 

Bis ich zurück im Terminal war, konnte ich den Airbus A320 der Aircalin besteigen und pünktlich um 16:45 Uhr hoben wir von Nadi ab... Nun hatte ich doch ganze 5 Wochen hier auf Fidschi verbracht, aber lange nicht so viel unternommen und gesehen, wie ich wollte... : ( Vielleicht ein andermal?

 

Victoria came home for lunch to spend my last hour before my departure with me and say good-bye... : ( Shortly before 3 pm Bal appeared with his taxi, we loaded my luggage and off we went to the airport... The airport is located only about 10 km from the town of Nadi and shortly after 3 pm we arrived there. At the check in I received extra service from Tahimeen and Tyrone, Aircalin, and I could take my second suitcase for free! : )) At the office of Aircalin I paid and got my return ticket from Wallis to Futuna – like this I have a programme for the coming week! ; )

 

Until I was back in the terminal, I could board the Airbus A320 of the Aircalin and on time at 4:45 pm we took off from Nadi... Now I had spent 5 weeks here on Fiji, but not seen and undertaken and much as I intended to... : ( Perhaps another time?

Es war ziemlich bewölkt unterwegs und am bereits am Einnachten als wir 1 1/2 Stunden später in Wallis landeten. Das war ein echter Rummel für diese kleine Insel als die Maschine landete und wieder mal ein paar Touristen brachte, es schien als hätten sich alle Bewohner der Insel hier versammelt! Ich wurde von einer weiteren Victoria mit einem extrem wohlduftenden Blumenkranz begrüsst und mit weiteren 7 chinesischen Gästen fuhren wir zum Hotel Moana Hoa, eines der beiden Hotels auf der Insel. Übrigens spricht man hier französisch und fährt auf der rechten Seite... 

 

It was quite cloudy during the whole flight and already dark when we landed in Wallis 1 1/2 hours later. This was a real hustle and bustle for this small island when the big airplane landed and brought some tourists, it seemed as if all the inhabitants of the island had gathered here! I was welcomed by another Victoria with an extremely fragrant flower garland and with another 7 Chinese guests we drove to the hotel Moana Hoa, one of the two hotels on the island. By the way, here they speak French and drive on the right side of the road...

Ich erhielt ein wunderschönes Zimmer, richtete mich für 3 Nächte ein und begab mich dann zu den geselligen Angestellten ins Restaurant um Pläne für meine Tage hier auf Wallis zu schmieden...

Wunden pflegen... / curing my wounds...

 

 

Die Tage bei Victoria in Nadi verbrachte ich vor allem mit der Pflege meiner Wunden... meine Schnitte und Schürfungen waren richtige Löcher oder Riesenbeulen, die extrem eiterten. Ich wusch sie regelmässig aus, liess sie trocknen und versorgte sie mit Salbe... Zudem hatte und ich in der ersten Woche hier zurück auf Fidschi gewaltige Schmerzen - der Rücken meldete sich zurück! Ich konnte mich 3 Tage kaum bewegen und es war nicht auszuhalten, so dass ich auf meine Notration Ponstan 500 zurückgriff - die glücklicherweise nutzte. - Ich deutete die Schmerzen als Nachwehen des Schockes... 

 

The days at Victoria place in Nadi I spent mainly with taking care of my wounds... my cuts and scratches were real holes or giant constantly festering botches. I washed them out regularly, let them dry and put ointment. In addition, I had tremendous pain in the first week back here in Fiji - my back pain was back! I could hardly move for 3 days and it was unbearable, that’s why I used my Ponstan 500 emergency provision - which luckily helped. - I took the pain as a result that I had come over the shock...

Irgendwie fühlte ich mich gestrandet und so wehrlos... alles schien stillzustehen! Ich hatte vor Victoria für ein verlängertes Wochenende an einen Ort in Fidschi einladen, den sie und auch ich noch nicht kannte... zuerst vertagten wir die Pläne wegen meines kritischen Zustandes und dann kam eine Zyklonwarnung dazwischen: Zyklon Ella raste in einem Höllentempo auf Fidschi zu und es wurde zuerst vorausgesagt, dass sie Donnerstag Abend Vanua Levu und die Ostküste Viti Levus heimsuchen werde... Dies veranlasste uns natürlich unsere Pläne nochmals zu verschieben... : ( Glücklicherweise wurde Ella schwächer statt stärker und driftete in eine andere Richtung ab! : ) 

 

Somehow I felt stranded and so helpless... everything seemed to stand still! I intended to invite Victoria for a long weekend to a place in Fiji, which she and me to had not been yet... first we postponed our plans because of my critical condition and then a cyclone warning intervened: Cyclone Ella raced at breakneck spead towards Fiji and the forecast was, that she would hit Vanua Levu and the east coast of Viti Levus on Thursday evening... This naturally caused us to postpone our plans again...: ( Fortunately, Ella weakened instead of becoming stronger and drifted in another direction! : )

In meinem Zustand hatte ich keine grosse Lust das Haus zu verlassen lassen.... Ich konnte Victoria in der ersten Woche nicht mal zur Arbeit begleiten und begab mich jeweils später im Gänsemarsch zu meinen Lieblingcafés... 

 

In my condition, I did not really feel the desire to leave the house.... I even was not able to accompany Victoria to work in the first week and limped later to my favorite cafes to have a nice double espresso and a fresh fruit juice or delicious cappuccino and pastry...

Als es mir wieder etwas besser ging, fühlte ich einen enormen Nachholbedarf Sport zu treiben... so machte ich mich jeweils auf zum Wailoaloa Beach und zurück per Bus und Autostopp, weil ich der direkte Bus zu lange nicht erschien. Ich weiss nicht ob das Meerwasser gut oder schlecht für meine Wunden war, das Trocknen an der Sonne wirkte jedoch wie ein Wunder! : ) 

 

When I was felt a bit better I missed being active a lor... so I went to Wailoaloa Beach and back by bus and hitchhiking (because I did not want to wait for the bus forever!). I do not know whether the salt water was good or bad for my wounds, but having in the sun drying them seemed to effect miracle! : )

Abends kochten wir (resp. Victoria) oder wir holten uns etwas von einem Restaurant. An den wenigen Tagen, an denen es mir etwas besser ging, erkundeten wir 'neue' Restaurants oder besuchten die guten altbekannten. Unser Favorit war klar Street Food Fiji (kurz vor Denarau) - wir waren voll begeistert, nicht nur vom fantastischen Essen sondern auch von der kreativen Atmosphäre! : ) Aber das echte Highlight war aber Victorias Muttertagsmenu: Sie war den ganzen Morgen in der Küche beschäftigt und zauberte ca. 10 verschiedene Gerichte, die besser nicht sein konnten! In guter Gesellschaft von Frauen Power war das Ganze ein Hochgenuss!

In the evenings we (resp. Victoria) cooked or we got something from a restaurant. On the few days I was felt like going out, we explored 'new' restaurants or visited the good old and known ones. Our favorite was clearly Street Food Fiji (just before Denarau) - we were thrilled by not only the fantastic food but also by the creative atmosphere! : ) But the real highlight was Victoria's cooking for Mother's Day: She was busy in the kitchen the whole morning and prepared about 10 different dishes, which could not have been be better! In good company of women's power the lunch was a highlight!
